I was born in a Catholic country, so by default the only religion that I was aware of was Catholicism, and all others considered as Heretics. I saw faith and everything connected to God through the prism of the church as an organisation, which invented God, the tradition, and many rules without clear explanation which I was meant to follow. My reaction to this teaching was becoming an atheist. Visiting Edinburgh during the summer before my first year of University in Oxford I met some friendly people at the Globe Cafe, a Christian-run meeting place, who were willing to answer all my 'tough questions'.
One of them during the Easter break of my first year gave me the book, Turning Points by St Ebbe’s Rector, Vaughan Roberts, which explained clearly the message of the Bible, and said what Christianity is, and what it certainly isn't. Only then I understood that religion is not about a choice of where to go on Sunday, but rather what should be my path for the entire life. Also, I realised that Christianity cannot be equalled to Catholicism, and that some of the practices I saw on the mass had no direct relevance to the Bible. Going back to Oxford after Easter I met Vaughan, enrolled to Focus, and started studying all that hitherto I chose to deliberately ignore.
But it took another year to realise that Christianity is a full submission to Christ, requiring to fully expose my sins to God for forgiveness, and have them forgiven through the blood of Christ (Deut 4:29 'But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul'). In this submission I found freedom that I have never experienced before, knowing that I am in a right relationship with the Creator of the Universe. Consequently, I knew that my pursuit of science and everything else that I do must be an act of love towards God, and that all must lead to His glory, which totally changed my life.
Since August 2010 I have been free in Christ, from being the object of God's wrath ('As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins' Ephesians 2:1) I have been adopted as His child ('But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.' Ephesians 2:5-6 ). In June 2011 I have reaffirmed my baptismal vows to encourage those still unsure of their faith, strengthen my brothers and sisters in faith, and say aloud how humbleness of heart, given by the Spirit, leads to a life which makes more sense than ever, with God at its centre.
